As spring transitions into summer (and super hot temperatures), it's time to highlight one of our month-to-month favorites: The Miss Kim Lilac.
Not only does Miss Kim boast incredible fragrance and rich color, but it's also super simple to maintain. In fact, it does particularly well inSouthern states with high temps, unlike many other Lilac varieties. Even better? It's cold hardy down to -20 degrees. Is there anything Miss Kim can't do? Check out more below!
Scouting the Area
First thing's first: It's time to select the perfect area for your Miss Kim Lilac. The process is effortless, but for Miss Kim to reach its full potential, it's important to plant in the right area.
Start by choosing a locale with full to partial sun, which means about 4 to 8 hours of sunlight per day and some protection from harsh afternoon exposure (6 hours of sunlight encourage maximum blooming!). And Miss Kim acclimates best in growing zones 4 through 8, so be cognizant of your growing zone. That means, generally, that the Miss Kim does well in a variety of climates, so long as it has the right amount of sun and well-drained soil.
When you're finally ready to plant your Miss Kim Lilac, dig a hole that's about twice the width of your Lilac's root ball and just as deep, placeMiss Kim, and backfill the soil. Finally, tamp down to settle the soil and water to ensure the roots take hold.
Ongoing Care
Possibly the best news of all, especially for those of us without a green thumb, is that planting is the most difficult step in the process (and it really couldn't be easier, right?).
The next step to ensuring your Miss Kim thrives is a regular watering schedule. But don't be intimidated: It's effortlessly, too. For yourMiss Kim Lilac, we recommend watering once or twice weekly, or a bit more often in extreme heat. Allow the surrounding soil to dry about 1 to 2 inches down before watering again.
We also recommend watering later in the evening, after the heat of the day has subsided.
Pruning
Another bit of good news: Lilacs don't need much pruning! Pruning to remove dead or diseased branches should suffice. And do remove faded or spent flowers as soon as you see them...this process encourages healthier, fuller blooms to take hold.
FGT Tip: Sterilize any tools for pruning with rubbing alcohol for a super clean cut!
Fertilizing Finale
And finally, fertilizing. It's an often overlooked but necessary step in your journey to revamp and refresh your landscape. Many are daunted by the process, not sure of which fertilizer to choose, but Miss Kim isn't finicky.
Fertilize your Miss Kim in the early spring, before blooming, with a well-balanced blend. A 10-10-10 formula or all-purpose shrub fertilizer should do the trick. Spread your fertilizer evenly around the root zone of your Miss Kim Lilac and follow the label instructions. This fertilizing process should be sufficient to feed the soil, and you'll reap the rewards of aromatic vibes and amazing good looks.
So, if you're seeking springtime color that lasts into summer (with the added perk of carefree growth), the Miss Kim Lilac is choice.Check out more about Miss Kim here!
