Planting & Care
1. Planting: Start by digging a hole three times wider than the plant's root ball. The hole should be deep enough for the plant to sit level with or slightly above the surrounding ground. Gently separate tightly bound roots and place the plant in the hole, then backfill with soil, avoiding the rootball. For best results, plant the Autumn Sunburst® Encore® Azalea in well-draining acidic soil mixed with rich gardening soil. Top the soil with 3-4 inches of mulch to retain moisture without covering the rootball. Ensure the plant gets 4-6 hours of direct sun daily for optimal blooms.
2. Watering: After planting, water thoroughly with a hose. Develop a regular watering schedule based on your plant's needs and local weather. Avoid overwatering. Aim for 2-3 waterings per week, adjusting for high heat and drought. Check the soil regularly to prevent drying out or oversaturation.
3. Fertilizing: Remember to fertilize with an acidic plant fertilizer in spring, provide winter protection for the Autumn Sunburst in its first couple of growing seasons, and apply regular fertilizer to encourage blooming and growth.
4. Pruning: Prune your Encore Azalea immediately after the spring flowering if it needs pruning. Best to prune right after the spring bloom--if you wait too long, you will prune fall buds.
