Fine Texture + Evergreen Foliage

Why Baby Gem™ Boxwood Shrubs?

Easy-growing perfection in a classic evergreen package: The Baby Gem™ Boxwood boasts all the benefits of the timeless shrub in a redefined, improved growth habit. Introduced in 2010, the Baby Gem is crafted for a graceful look, with small leaves and finely-textured foliage for a well-curated appearance.

Though the Baby Gem’s mature foliage is dark green in hue, new leaves with a cheery yellow tint, nearly-chartreuse, emerge in spring. This sleek shrub’s neat and tidy growth habit boasts even more visual depth as a result. Plus, because its foliage reaches the ground, it’s packed tightly in a dense, full-coverage silhouette.

And you get a manicured appearance without the fuss. Although this boxwood can be pruned and shaped, it grows naturally into a modernized, polished silhouette. The Baby Gem is like instant curb appeal, taking flower beds and foundations to the next level, as well as porches and patios when planted in a container.

Pollination Info

Baby Gem Boxwood Shrub Pollination

This holly is a female-only cultivar that requires the presence of a male holly in the same area in order to produce berries.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Though it tolerates partial shade, particularly during the afternoon hours, it thrives in at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily.

Dig your hole only to the depth of the Baby Gem’s root ball. Once you’ve placed the shrub in your the hole, ensure you backfill the soil. Your shrub should also be planted in an area with well-drained soil to avoid root rot and planted away from downspouts.

We recommend mulching the area surrounding your new Baby Gem. Adding a 3- to 4-inch layer of mulch around your planted shrub will help it conserve moisture and suppress weeds.

2. Watering: During the first year after planting your shrub, a regular watering schedule is essential. Water the Baby Gem each week if the natural rainfall for your area doesn’t supply enough water. If you're not sure when to water, just check the surrounding soil - if the soil is dry, it's time to water.

3. Fertilizing: Perform a soil test in the area where your Baby Gem is or will be planted. If fertilizer is recommended per your soil test results, apply during spring, when new growth emerges. New growth will be easy to spot because fresh leaves are toned with a vibrant shade of light, bright green.
