A Bold Tropical Plant for Indoors or Out
Whether you want to add visual interest and excitement inside or out, the 'Black Magic' Cordyline is the perfect choice! This unique tropical plant is known for its glossy, sword-shaped leaves, which emerge green and then deepen to a dark purple. The long-lasting foliage is striking, extending from 1 to 2.5 feet and cascading dramatically.
Commonly known as the Ti plant, Black Magic is hardy, fast-growing, and low maintenance. With an upright, spreading growth habit, it loves hot, humid conditions. Highly adaptable, Ti thrives in both full sun and partial shade, but prefers to bask in bright, indirect light when possible.
A standout no matter where it is planted, Black Magic adds a touch of mystery to indoor spaces. Plant in containers and place in corners, atop bookshelves, or along windowsills. It is also an excellent option for outdoor landscapes in warmer climates, especially when used as an accent plant or in mixed borders. Grow yours today!
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Black Magic will do best in an area with bright, indirect light, so choose a location that receives morning sun and afternoon shade or dappled sunlight throughout the day.
Ti plants prefer slightly acidic soil that is fertile and well-drained. Sandy or loamy soil with plenty of organic matter works well. Cover the area around the plant with a 2- to 6-inch deep layer of mulch, 4 inches from the trunk's base.
Black Magic does well in pots, especially if you don’t live in a tropical climate - simply bring them indoors for the winter. When it’s time to move the plant outdoors during warmer months, make sure the outdoor soil drains well and any threat of frost has passed.
2. Watering: When outdoors, water Black Magic deeply (about one inch of water) twice a week.
For container planting, wait for the top inch of soil to dry and water deeply until it runs from the drainage holes.
3. Fertilizing: Feed in the spring with slow-release pellets, then feed weekly during the growing season with a liquid 20-20-20 fertilizer at half-strength.
