Planting & Care

1. Planting: This sedge plant thrives in partially sunny to fully shaded areas and can adapt to various soil types, including wet soil. In cooler zones, it has been observed to tolerate full sun. It grows best in partially sunny areas (4-6 hours of sunlight) but can also thrive in shady areas (less than 4 hours of sunlight). When planting, space other plants 12-24 inches apart.

2. Watering: Water the newly planted perennial deeply once or twice a week to encourage proper root growth. While this plant prefers moist soil, it is more drought-tolerant than other sedges. Adding 2 to 3 inches of mulch can help the soil retain moisture and protect the roots from extreme temperatures.

3. Fertilizing: For optimal growth, fertilize with a slow-release, balanced fertilizer when planting and in spring. It needs very little. On poor soil, a light scattering of time-release fertilizer in spring should be sufficient.

4. Pruning: Remember to prune back your sedge to about 2 inches if you are in an area where the grass dies back. New growth will emerge in spring. There's no special care required, and it holds its color over winter, so it's best to wait until early spring to cut back the foliage.
