Brown Turkey Fig Tree Pollination
Brown Turkey Fig Trees are self-fertile. You will get fruit with only one plant. However, adding an additional Brown Turkey Fig Tree will drastically increase the size of your crop.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Start by choosing a location for your Brown Turkey Fig that receives at least 8 to 10 hours of sunlight per day, and ensure you plant after the final freeze of the season.
To plant your Brown Turkey, dig a hole deep enough to cover its root ball. After placing your tree and loosening its roots, tamp down the soil several times while backfilling. Then, water your tree to settle the soil.
2. Watering: Brown Turkey Figs are drought tolerant once established, but well-drained soil and proper water management in the initial two years are important. You'll need to water your Brown Turkey adequately until it is established. Check if it’s ready to water by feeling the soil (using your fingers) – if it is dry, water your tree.
3. Pruning: To maintain the size of your tree in your yard or pot, prune to your desired size and remove any dead or diseased branches. Brown Turkey Fig Trees can be held to any height, provided they’re pruned regularly.
4. Fertilizing: Generally, Brown Turkeys do not require fertilizer unless they’re container-grown – in that case, feed your tree three or four times per year with a well-balanced fruit tree fertilizer.
5. Harvesting: Some varieties of figs, including the Brown Turkey, can bear two crops per year: The first crop, known as the Breba crop, is produced in the spring on the previous year’s growth. The second crop, which is the main crop, is produced during the fall on the current year’s growth. For best quality and ease, allow your figs to ripen on your tree, picking them when they become somewhat soft.
