The Purr-fect Purple Perennial for a Low-Maintenance Garden
If you’re looking for a low-maintenance, high-impact perennial, Proven Winners® Cat's Meow Nepeta is the one to plant. As the 2025 Proven Winners National Landscape Perennial of the Year®, this standout variety boasts a naturally compact, mounded habit that stays neat and tidy all season long. Its fragrant, gray-green foliage provides a beautiful contrast to the abundant lavender-blue blooms that appear from early summer to fall.
This cold-hardy, heat- and drought-tolerant perennial thrives in full sun and requires little upkeep, making it an excellent choice for borders, garden beds, and containers. Plus, it’s a magnet for pollinators—butterflies, and hummingbirds flock to its blooms. While your cat might love the scent, deer and rabbits will stay away, ensuring your plants remain untouched.
Designed for effortless beauty, Cat’s Meow Nepeta is a continuous bloomer that will keep your garden vibrant for months. Its dense, upright growth means it holds its shape without pruning, so you can spend more time enjoying your garden rather than maintaining it.
Add a touch of soft color, delightful fragrance, and pollinator-friendly charm to your outdoor space with Proven Winners® Cat’s Meow Nepeta. Its unbeatable combination of beauty, resilience, and ease of care makes it a must-have for any gardener looking to create a thriving, fuss-free landscape. Grow yours today!
About Proven Winners®: Proven Winners® ColorChoice Shrubs offers flowering shrubs, evergreens, and trees that have been tested for eight to ten years to ensure they outperform conventional varieties. That means bigger flowers, more colorful foliage, reblooming, disease resistance, new habits, or anything that makes them more beautiful and easier to grow in your landscape or garden.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Choose a location that receives full sun (at least 6 hours) with well-drained soil to plant your Cat’s Meow Nepeta. Dig a hole that is twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball. Gently remove the plant from its container and place it in the hole, ensuring the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill the hole with soil, pressing lightly to remove any air pockets. Water the plant thoroughly after planting to help settle the soil.
2. Watering: For the first few weeks after planting, keep the soil consistently moist to help establish the roots. Once established, the Cat’s Meow Nepeta is drought-tolerant, so it can handle dry conditions but will still benefit from regular watering during extended dry periods. Allow the soil to dry out between waterings. In hot, dry weather, water deeply once a week.
3. Fertilizing: In early spring, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer just as the plant starts to show new growth. If the plant appears to need a boost, you can apply a light dose of fertilizer in early summer, but avoid over-fertilizing. Cat’s Meow Nepeta thrives on minimal feeding, and too much fertilizer can lead to leggy growth and fewer blooms.
