Vibrant color and resilience meet in this stunning tree

The Colorama™ Purple Crape Myrtle Tree stands out with its breathtaking clusters of deep purple flowers that paint your garden from summer to fall. This tree not only enhances the aesthetic appeal of your landscape but also serves as a habitat for birds and butterflies, adding a lively dynamic to your outdoor space. Its upright habit makes it a wonderful choice for borders or as a focal point in garden beds, drawing attention and admiration.

One of the standout features of this tree is its impressive drought tolerance, enabling it to thrive in various conditions. It comfortably adapts to clay soil, making it an excellent option for gardens with less-than-ideal soil types. As a water-wise choice, this tree helps conserve resources while still providing vibrant blooms and attracting wildlife. Choose the Colorama™ Purple Crapemyrtle Tree to bring lasting color and life to your yard with minimal upkeep.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Select a sunny location that receives at least 6 hours of direct sunlight daily. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and slightly shallower, allowing the top of the root ball to sit just above ground level for proper drainage. Backfill with a mix of native soil and compost, then apply a 3-inch settled layer of mulch extending about 3 feet around the tree, keeping mulch pulled back several inches from the trunk.

2. Watering: Water deeply 2–3 times per week during the first growing season to establish strong roots. Full establishment may take up to three years, during which the tree will benefit from weekly deep watering. Once established, this tree is drought tolerant but will flower and perform best with about 1 inch of rainfall per week. During prolonged dry spells, supplemental watering is recommended.

3. Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead or crossing branches to improve airflow, and lightly shape as needed to maintain the tree’s natural form. Maintain no more than five main trunks, removing root suckers as they appear. Avoid topping crape myrtles, as this practice reduces vigor and weakens the tree.

4. Fertilizing: In early spring, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer such as Espoma Garden Tone® 10-10-10 to support healthy growth and flowering. Always follow package instructions for application rates based on the size of the tree.
