At just 8 feet tall, the Columnar Mugo pine can be used for entryways and foundational plantings, focal points, or as a lower growing screen. With a preference for cool climates, mugo pines have show good adaptability to urban conditions and are exceptionally cold hardy. In addition to its aesthetic appeal, the Mugo pine is also relatively low-maintenance, providing you with more time to enjoy your garden than to work on it.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a location with full sun and well-draining soil to ensure proper growth. Dig a hole that is twice the width of the root ball but no deeper than it stands in the container to encourage healthy root development. Backfill with a mix of compost and native soil, then spread a 3 inch layer of mulch 3 feet around the tree, pulling the mulch back a few inches from the trunk.
2. Watering: Water the tree regularly during its first two growing seasons to help establish a strong root system. Once established, Mugo pines are drought-tolerant, but during dry spells, watering every few weeks will support optimal health.
3. Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain the tree's shape and encourage bushier growth. Remove any dead or damaged branches and thin out overcrowded areas to promote airflow around the foliage.
4. Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer designed for evergreens to support growth. Follow the package instructions for the correct application rate, and avoid over-fertilizing, as this can harm the tree.
