Planting & Care

1. Planting: The Dwarf Radicans can handle full sun all the way down to partial shade, depending on your location. In northern states, plant in full to partial sunlight (4 to 8 hours of sunlight daily). Those in southern states can plant their Radicans in areas with partial sunlight to partial shade (3 to 6 hours of direct sunlight daily).

From there, select a location with well-drained soil and dig a hole as deep as the root ball and twice the width. Place your tree in the hole, backfill the soil, and water the surrounding area to settle the roots. Finally, apply mulch to conserve moisture.

If you’re planting in a container, select a pot that’s twice the width of your tree’s shipped container and ensure it has drainage holes. Use organic potting soil, place your tree, and put your tree in an area with sunlight and humidity. If you’re growing indoors, a south-facing window is best.

2. Watering: Water ground-planted trees with one inch of water weekly, unless you have rainfall. If you’re not sure when to water, check the surrounding soil about 2 inches down. When the soil is dry at this depth, water your tree.

Check the soil at the same depth for your container-planted Dwarf Radicans, and water until you see it flowing from the drainage holes. You can also mist your tree to provide humidity.

3. Fertilizing: Your Dwarf Radicans Gardenia can be fertilized once every 3 to 4 weeks from April through November. Use a formula that’s high in nitrogen, like 30-10-10.

FGT Tip: If you notice the leaves on your plant starting to yellow, you can mix in a tablespoon of Epsom Salt with a gallon of water and apply this around your plant.

4. Pruning: Gardenias are best pruned in the summer after blooming. Remove any dead or broken branches from the tree, and prune back any branches with spent flowers.
