A resilient choice for versatile landscapes
The Fox Valley® River Birch Tree is a stunning addition to any yard, offering not only beauty but also impressive resilience. One of its standout features is its excellent resistance to the bronze birch borer, a common pest that can devastate other birch varieties. This makes it a reliable choice for those looking for a low-maintenance tree that won’t require constant vigilance against pests. The Fox Valley® River Birch boasts lovely, peeling bark that adds an artistic touch to the landscape throughout all seasons, making it as visually appealing in winter as it is in summer.
This tree thrives in a variety of soil conditions, adapting easily to its environment, though it prefers moist, slightly acidic soils. Whether you're aiming to create a shaded area in your yard or add an intriguing focal point, this tree's graceful, arching branches and delicate green leaves make it a wonderful fit. Ideal for urban settings or suburban landscapes, the strobing colors of its foliage in fall will enchant your neighbors and bring a burst of vibrancy to your outdoor space all year round.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: When selecting a location for your Fox Valley® River Birch Tree, choose a spot that receives full sun to partial shade. Dig a hole that is two to three times wider than the root ball, and ensure the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface when planted. Backfill with a mix of native soil and compost to provide nutrients. Water the tree thoroughly after planting to help it settle into its new home.
2. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during the first growing season after planting. While the Fox Valley® River Birch is adaptable, it thrives best in moist conditions. Watering deeply and regularly will support its development and maintain healthy foliage. During dry spells, be sure to check the moisture levels and adjust your watering schedule accordingly.
3. Pruning: Pruning should generally be done in late winter or early spring before new growth begins. Remove any dead or damaged branches, as well as any branches that compete for space in the center of the tree. This helps improve air circulation and encourages a strong, healthy structure, promoting overall health and aesthetics.
4. Fertilizing: Fertilizing isn’t always necessary, especially if your soil is rich in organic materials. However, if you see slow growth or poor color, a balanced, slow-release fertilizer applied in early spring can provide a nutrient boost. Make sure to follow the package instructions for the best results, and avoid over-fertilizing as this can harm the tree.
