Planting & Care
1. Planting: Choose a location that receives full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil for your peony. Dig a hole that is about twice the width of the root ball and slightly shallower than the height of the roots. Place the plant in the hole, ensuring the eyes (buds) of the plant are no more than 1-2 inches below the soil surface. Fill in with soil and water thoroughly to eliminate air pockets.
2. Watering: Water the peony plant regularly during its first growing season to establish a strong root system. Once established, it is tolerant of dry spells but appreciate consistent moisture during blooming. Be careful not to overwater, as peonies prefer well-drained conditions.
3. Pruning: In late fall, after the foliage has died back, cut back the stems to the ground to promote healthy growth the next season. In early spring, remove any dead or damaged leaves to make way for new growth. This not only helps maintain plant health but also improves air circulation.
4. Fertilizing: A root supportive fertilizer like Espoma Biotone can be used at planting. In subsequent years, bulb fertilizers can be used after flowering or compost can be worked into soil to improve fertility and overall soil quality. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, as they can lead to lush foliage at the expense of flowers.
