Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a location with full sun to part sun—more sun will produce better blooming. Peonies need well-draining soil and will not tolerate wet sites, so avoid planting in low areas or compacted soil and keep them away from overhead sprinklers. Because peonies dislike being moved, select a permanent planting location. Be patient, as it typically takes 2–3 years for peonies to establish and begin blooming.
2. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy, especially during dry spells. Water deeply to encourage strong root growth, then reduce frequency once established. Avoid overwatering, as soggy soil can lead to root rot.
3. Pruning: In late fall, after the foliage has died back, cut stems down to about 4 inches above the ground to encourage healthy growth the following season. In early spring, remove any dead or damaged leaves to make room for new growth and improve air circulation.
4. Fertilizing: A root-supportive fertilizer such as Espoma Bio-tone® can be used at planting. In subsequent years, apply a bulb fertilizer after flowering or work compost into the soil to improve fertility and overall soil quality. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which can promote lush foliage at the expense of blooms. In early spring as new growth begins, apply a balanced, slow-release fertilizer following package instructions for your plant’s size.
