Planting & Care
1. Planting: Choose a location with full to partial sun and well-drained soil for optimal growth. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and place the plant so that the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Space plants approximately 3 feet apart for proper air circulation.
2. Watering: Water the peony regularly, especially during dry spells, but avoid overwatering as they prefer slightly dry conditions. A deep watering once a week is generally sufficient, allowing the soil to dry out between waterings.
3. Pruning: After blooming, remove spent flowers to encourage new growth and maintain plant shape. In late fall, cut back foliage to about 3 inches above the ground to prevent disease and prepare for winter.
4. Fertilizing: Feed with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer in early spring as new growth begins. Avoid high-nitrogen fertilizers, which can lead to weak blooms. A light application in mid-summer can also support continued growth and flowering.
