A stunning addition to any compact space
The Garden Gems Emerald Falls® Redbud Tree is a charming choice for smaller yards and decorative containers, thanks to its lovely, compact, weeping form. This North American native features heart-shaped foliage that emerges with soft red tints in spring before maturing to rich green, creating a beautiful seasonal transition without appearing solid red.
In early spring, clusters of purple-pink blooms cover the branches before the foliage fully leafs out, adding vibrant color and pollinator appeal. Its unique, stacked branching and cascading habit create an elegant focal point that fits beautifully into urban gardens, patios, and other limited spaces.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Select a location that receives full sun to partial shade with well-draining soil. In warmer zones, plant in morning sun with afternoon shade to help prevent leaf scorch and promote healthy growth. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and position the tree in the center. Backfill gently with native soil and compost. Apply a 3" settled layer of mulch in a 3-foot-wide ring around the tree, pulling mulch back a few inches from the trunk. Water thoroughly after planting to settle the soil.
2. Watering: Water your Emerald Falls Redbud regularly during its first growing season to establish a strong root system. Water slowly at the base using a drip hose or bucket, and avoid overhead watering. Trees may take up to three years to fully establish; during this time, growth and flowering may be slower. Once established, redbuds prefer moderate moisture and can tolerate some drought. Keep the soil consistently moist but not soggy.
3. Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to maintain its desired shape and encourage healthy growth. Remove any dead or crowded branches to improve air circulation and light penetration. Light pruning is often enough to keep its weeping form in check.
4. Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to promote robust growth. Take care not to over-fertilize, as this can lead to excessive leaf growth at the expense of flowering. Follow the recommended application rates based on your specific fertilizer.
