Planting & Care
1. Planting: Choose a well-drained location with full to partial sun exposure. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Place the shrub in the hole, making sure the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface. Backfill with soil, water thoroughly, and mulch around the base to retain moisture.
2. Watering: Water regularly during the first two growing seasons to establish a strong root system. Once established, water deeply during dry spells. Gardenias prefer consistent moisture but do not tolerate soggy soil, so ensure proper drainage.
3. Pruning: Prune immediately after flowering for best results. Remove any dead or damaged branches, and shape the shrub to maintain a tidy appearance. Avoid heavy pruning, as gardenias bloom on old wood.
4. Fertilizing: Apply a fertilizer for acid loving plants like Espoma Holly Tone in the spring and again in early summer. Do not fertilize in fall, as this will push new tender growth that can get damaged by frost.
