Resilient Red Blooms that Thrives in Tough Climates
Meet the most vivid addition to the renowned Holden series: Holden’s™ Red Hybrid Rhododendron. This dense, spreading evergreen bursts into bloom each May with large, ruffled red flowers that feature a soft, lighter center. Its eye-catching buds add color through winter, setting the stage for a springtime explosion of red.
Built to thrive in tough conditions, Holden’s™ Red has been rigorously tested for high resistance to both cold and disease, especially Phytophthora cinnamomi (cinnamon fungus). It’s reliably hardy down to -20°F (Zone 5), making it one of the most dependable Rhododendrons for northern gardens.
Its thick, glossy evergreen leaves provide texture and year-round interest, but they also act as a perfect backdrop for those brilliant red blooms. This combination of showy floral display and rich foliage makes it a great choice for hedges, woodland edges, and mixed shrub borders. It’s equally stunning as a stand-alone specimen or planted in groups for dramatic color impact.
Holden’s™ Red is even pollinator-friendly, drawing in butterflies and hummingbirds. Whether used to brighten up shaded corners or anchor a foundation bed, this cold-tolerant variety delivers dependable performance and unforgettable seasonal color, year after year. Grow yours today!
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Choose a location with full shade (especially in hotter climates) and well-drained, acidic soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant so the top of the root ball is level with the surrounding soil. Backfill and water thoroughly. Add mulch around the base to retain moisture and insulate roots.
2. Watering: Keep soil evenly moist, especially during the first year. Avoid soggy conditions. Rhododendrons have shallow roots, so consistent watering in dry spells is important, particularly during bloom season.
3. Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring with a slow-release, acid-loving plant fertilizer. Avoid overfeeding, which can damage roots and limit bloom production.
4. Pruning: Minimal pruning is needed. Remove spent blooms after flowering to encourage next year’s buds, and lightly shape the plant in late spring if desired.
