Exotic Blooms Add Life to Your Landscape!

Why Hummingbird Trees?

The Hummingbird Tree (Sesbania Grandiflora) is a living optical illusion. At first glance, its clusters of bright red flowers resemble a group of fluttering hummingbirds hovering around your tree. Hummingbird Trees can produce blooms in varying hues of red, white and pink, and this red-flowering variety will pack a colorful punch in your home or yard.

Its thin, straight trunk diverges into loose branches with fern-like fronds in a vibrant green. Bright red flowers are followed by green fruit pods that grow up to 23 inches long, complementing the tree’s droopy canopy look.

In hot, humid climates like its native Southeast Asia, the fast-growing Hummingbird Tree can reach up to 40 feet tall. If you choose to keep it in a pot (perfect for cooler climates), cutting back new growth will help it maintain a more patio-friendly size. But don't worry - you’ll get to admire its famous blooms even in miniature form.

The Hummingbird Tree, or Sesbania Grandiflora, is also known as the Vegetable Hummingbird Tree - that's because its leaves, flowers, and fruits can all be consumed. Enjoy them raw, or toss them into soups, stews, and stir fry dishes for extra nutritional value. The Hummingbird Tree also has medicinal uses, beloved in Southeast Asia for teas and salves.

This bountiful tree will attract birds and pollinators, and its timber can even be used for woodworking. As a fully grown tree, it provides excellent shade for seating areas or low-growing plants at its base.

Planting & Care

Climate and Location: A native of Southeast Asia, the Hummingbird Tree will grow best in hot, humid climates, including growing zones 9-11. If you live in a cooler climate, plant your Sesbania Grandiflora in a patio container, where you can easily move it indoors when temperatures drop below 50 degrees.

Planting: If planting your Hummingbird Tree outdoors, choose a sunny location that's well-protected from harsh winds - these trees are full-sun lovers (6-8 hours of sunlight daily). They will tolerate most well-draining soils. Dig a hole twice the size of your tree's root ball, place your tree, and backfill with soil, tamping down as you go to remove air pockets. Water well to settle the roots, and consider mulching around the base of the tree to conserve moisture and control soil temperature.

If planting your Hummingbird Tree in a container (recommended for growing zones 8 and up), choose a container that's one to two sizes larger than your shipped container, with good drainage.

Watering: Although your Hummingbird Tree can tolerate drought once established, it prefers moist soil. Water regularly while your tree is establishing, and weekly after that. Water more frequently for container-planted Hummingbird Trees, keeping the soil evenly moist.

Fertilizing: The Hummingbird Tree doesn't require much fertilizer. However, you can optionally feed it with a well-balanced, 10-10-10 fertilizer before flowering.
