Easy, Container-Grown Harvests in 2 Years or Less

Why LSU Purple Fig Trees?

For a hardy tree that delivers super-sweet fruit with little effort, look no further than the LSU Purple Fig Tree. Bred by the Louisiana State University College of Agriculture for superior disease resistance and delicious fruit, the LSU Purple Fig is ideal for those who want easy growth and the promise of harvests from home.

And the LSU Fig produces fruit as early as the second year! Most fig trees take four to five years to reach full maturity and set fruit, but the LSU Purple Fig is capable of setting small crops of figs in its second or third year. Plus, with our bigger sizes, you could get fruit as soon as the very first growing season.

You can enjoy figs from April through December, indoors or out. Unlike other trees, the LSU Purple Fig has three fruiting seasons: a light crop in early spring, a large main crop in July and a late crop in November or even early December. This prolific bearer will have you eating sweet, healthy figs almost year-round, drying your own fruit for storage or making jams and preserves. With the sweet LSU Purple, the possibilities are endless, especially since it grows in a container...thriving wherever you place it. It's particularly well-suited to the Southeast and grows despite humid, hot conditions.

Now, you’ll enjoy the fruits of your labor, effortlessly. No matter how you use them, LSU Purple Figs are easy to grow and are grown for greatness from day one at our nursery. Get your own LSU Fig today!

Pollination Info

LSU Purple Fig Tree Pollination

LSU Purple Fig Trees are self-fertile. You will get fruit with only one plant. However, adding an additional LSU Purple Fig Tree will drastically increase the size of your crop.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Start by selecting an area with well-drained soil and full sun (6 to 8 hours per day), if you’re planting outside. LSU Purple Figs can tolerate some shade but prefer full sun.

If you’re planting in a container, select a pot that’s about twice the width of your plant’s shipped container and ensure the pot has drainage holes. Add a mixture of your natural soil and organic planting mix to the container before you place your tree in it. Place your tree, then water until you see water coming out the bottom of the pot. Place your Fig Tree in front of a sunny window and allow the top 2 inches of the soil to dry before watering again.

2. Watering: Generally, we recommend watering young trees twice weekly. If you’re not sure when to water, feel your soil about 2 to 3 inches down. If the soil is dry here, water your tree until you see it flowing from your pot’s drainage holes.

3. Fertilizing: Usually, Fig Trees don’t require any fertilizing, but if you notice slower growth, fertilize in the spring with a slow-release, well-balanced organic fertilizer, like formula 10-10-10.
