Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a sunny location with at least 6 hours of direct sunlight each day. Prepare the soil by ensuring it is well-draining and enriched with compost. Dig a hole about twice the size of the root ball, place the rose bush in the hole, and backfill with soil. Spread a layer of mulch extending 3 feet around the plant to conserve moisture, insulate roots, and suppress weeds. Water thoroughly after planting to help settle the roots.
2. Watering: For the first two weeks after planting, water every 2–3 days, then water deeply 1–2 times per week. Water more frequently in sandy soil or during hot, dry weather. A layer of mulch will help retain moisture and keep roots cool.
3. Pruning: Prune in late winter or early spring to encourage vigorous growth and flowering. Remove any dead or weak stems and shape the plant to maintain an open center for good air circulation. Up to one-third of the plant can be reduced during yearly pruning.
4. Fertilizing: Apply a slow-release, rose-specific fertilizer in early spring after the ground has thawed. A second application can be made in early summer. Do not fertilize after mid-summer.
