Planting & Care
1. Planting: Choose a sunny location with well-draining soil to plant your jalapeño peppers. It's best to sow seeds indoors 8-10 weeks before the last frost or purchase young plants from a nursery. Transplant outdoors after the danger of frost has passed, making sure to space them 18-24 inches apart to allow for adequate air circulation.
2. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist, especially during dry spells, but avoid overwatering to prevent root rot. Water at the base of the plant rather than overhead to reduce the risk of fungal diseases. A healthy balance is crucial—too dry, and you risk stunted growth; too wet, and you can damage the roots.
3. Pruning: Pruning is not usually necessary for jalapeño plants, but you may want to remove any dead or yellowing leaves to promote better air circulation. If the plant becomes overly bushy, selectively trimming back some stems can help enhance its growth and fruit production.
4. Fertilizing: Apply a balanced fertilizer every 4-6 weeks during the growing season to ensure your jalapeño plants receive the necessary nutrients. A fertilizer low in nitrogen and higher in phosphorus and potassium will encourage flowering and fruiting, boosting your harvest.
