Planting & Care
1. Planting: Choose a location with well-drained soil and at least six hours of sunlight each day. Dig a hole slightly larger than the root ball and add compost for richness. After placing the shrub in the hole, backfill with soil and water well.
2. Watering: Water regularly during the establishment phase. Once established, the shrub can tolerate mild drought but thrives with consistent moisture. Aim for deep watering every week during dry spells.
3. Pruning: Prune in late winter to early spring before new growth emerges. Remove any or spindly branches. Prune the shrub back by about a third, making cuts ¼” above a bud. This promotes fresh new growth. Dead or diseased wood can be pruned out anytime by making cuts back to a set of leaves.
4. Fertilizing: In early spring, after the ground has thawed, apply a slow release fertilizer for roses like Espoma Rose Tone per package rates. Re-apply in early spring. Avoid fertilizing in the heat of the summer, when roses may naturally slow down blooming until the weather cools in fall.
