Versatile and Low-Maintenance Lawn Alternative

The Pennsylvania Sedge is a hardy variety that was originally found growing in forested areas throughout the eastern U.S. The narrow grass-like leaves of the Pennsylvania Sedge grow in clumps up to 8 inches high with a fine texture and arching growth habit. It actively grows in spring and fall when soil temperatures are typically cooler, and blooms showy white flower spikes in spring.

Due to its grass-like appearance, the Pennsylvania Sedge has become a popular lawn alternative for home landscapes. Although it has the ability to grow in full sun or full shade, the Pennsylvania Sedge prefers partial shade and low foot traffic.

Creating a Pennsylvania Sedge lawn is easy: simply install the plants one foot apart into well-drained soil. These sedges will fill in the space to form a dense, low growing groundcover that doesn't need mowing. While it is commonly used as a groundcover/lawn alternative, the Pennsylvania Sedge also works well in shade gardens, where its soft texture will complement and blend with a wide range of perennials.

The Pennsylvania Sedge is a low-growing, versatile ground cover and lawn alternative that you need for your landscape. Order yours today!

Planting & Care

1. Planting: To plant Pennsylvania Sedge, dig a hole for the root ball and place the plant inside, covering it with soil and watering thoroughly. Plant in an area with part shade to full sun and either dry or well-drained soil, spacing each plant 1 foot apart.

2. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged while establishing, and later water deeply every two weeks as needed.

3. Fertilizing: Fertilizing is not needed for this plant.

4. Pruning: Pruning is not necessary, but the Pennsylvania Sedge can be cut back in late winter to promote new growth and a tidy appearance.
