Planting & Care
1. Planting: When choosing a location for your Blueberry bush, pick a spot with full sun and good drainage. Blueberry plants need acidic, well-draining soil with a pH lower than 5.5. When planting, dig a hole twice the size of the root ball and the same depth as the container. Space multiple bushes at least five feet apart in rows that are 10 feet apart. Mix peat moss with the soil, and cover the roots with the mixture. Blueberries are relatively resistant to pests and diseases when properly mulched. Mature bushes can reach a height of three to six feet and a width of up to three feet. Be aware that birds and squirrels may be attracted to the berries, so take measures to protect them.
2. Watering: Water blueberry bushes regularly to establish the root system. Keep the soil moist but not saturated. Light green leaves may indicate overwatering while drooping leaves can signal both over and underwatering.
3. Fertilization: You don't need to fertilize this blueberry bush at the time of planting. Instead, fertilize twice a year, once in the spring and once after harvest.
4. Weed Control: Hand-pull weeds near the blueberry shrubs. You can damage the shallow root system with garden tools.
5. Pruning: Blueberries require minimal pruning. You can thin out lower limbs to keep the fruit from touching the soil and thin out excessively vigorous upright shoots several feet from the ground to keep the center of the bush open and the bearing surface within reach. It's also important to thin out spindly, weak, or dead branches annually during the dormant season.
6. Pollinators: The Pink Lemonade Blueberry is self-fertile but benefits from cross-pollination for larger berries and higher yields. Planting another blueberry variety that blooms simultaneously is recommended.
