Planting & Care
1. Planting: Choose a location with full sun and well-drained soil for optimal growth. Dig a hole that is twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball. Gently loosen the roots if they are tightly bound, and place the tree in the hole, ensuring the graft union is level with the soil surface. Backfill with soil and water thoroughly after planting to eliminate air pockets.
2. Watering: After planting, regularly water your Red Jewel® Crabapple Tree, particularly during dry spells and the first couple of years as it establishes. Aim to provide about an inch of water per week, either through rainfall or irrigation. Be careful not to overwater, as soggy soil can lead to root rot.
3. Pruning: Prune your crabapple tree in late winter or early spring while it is still dormant. Remove any dead, diseased, or crossing branches to maintain an open canopy and promote healthy growth. Light thinning will encourage air circulation and bolster resistance against pests and diseases.
4. Fertilizing: In early spring, apply a balanced slow-release fertilizer formulated for flowering trees. Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for the correct amount to use based on your tree's age and size. This will support robust growth and encourage a profusion of blooms.
