A striking fusion of vibrant colors and compact charm
The Royal Hawaiian® ‘Waikiki’ is an exciting addition to the Colocasia family, celebrated for its stunning glossy green leaves adorned with flamboyant white and flamingo pink veining. This striking color breakthrough has caught the attention of both industry professionals and passionate plant enthusiasts alike. The unique contrast of hues provides a captivating visual element, enhancing any garden or patio with its warm tropical flair. Growing to a compact height and width of about 3 feet, this plant is perfect for creating stunning focal points in containers or garden beds. Its clumping habit allows it to thrive without taking over, making it an excellent choice for patios, water gardens, and statement plantings.
Colocasias prefer consistently moist soil and perform especially well when planted near ponds or water features. While adaptable, they do require regular watering, fertilizing, and occasional pruning to maintain their best appearance. Provide full sun to part shade for optimal growth. Dark green leaves emerge and develop a bold white pattern across the leaf surface. As the foliage matures, rich purple veining overlays the central white pattern, eventually turning the veins entirely purple. The most vibrant coloration appears in cooler weather and during the plant’s second growing season, offering evolving visual interest throughout the year.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Choose a location that receives partial to full sunlight and works well in well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and gently loosen the roots before placing the plant in the hole. Fill in with soil, ensuring the crown of the plant is at soil level, and then water thoroughly.
2. Watering: Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Regular watering is essential, especially during hot weather, to promote healthy growth. Ensure that any excess water drains freely to avoid root rot.
3. Pruning: Minimal pruning is needed for ‘Waikiki’. Remove any dead or damaged foliage to maintain its appearance and encourage new growth. Regularly check for pests and remove any affected leaves as necessary.
4. Fertilizing: Fertilize every 4-6 weeks during the growing season with a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. This will support lush foliage growth and enhance the plant’s vibrant coloration.
