Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Before planting, remove the stake and ties, which are only for shipping. In warmer zones, plant in morning sun, afternoon shade. Cooler zones can plant in more sun. Dig a hole that is twice the width of the root ball but no deeper than the root ball itself, and ensure the top of the root ball is level with the soil surface when planting. Backfill with soil and spread a layer of mulch three feet around the tree to conserve moisture, insulate roots, and suppress weeds.
2. Watering: During the first growing season, water deeply at the base 1-3 times a week, adjusting for rainfall and local conditions. After establishment, water deeply once a week, especially during periods of drought and heat.
3. Pruning: Light pruning can be done in late winter or early spring while the tree is still dormant. Remove any dead or crossing branches to promote healthy growth. Air circulation is essential to prevent disease, so keep the center of the tree open.
4. Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring before new growth begins. Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer to provide essential nutrients, but avoid excessive amounts as this can lead to weak growth.
