Unique, Sweet and Sour Refreshing Berries

The Strawberry Tree, or 'Muntingia calabura', is an energetic tree that attracts attention all year with its vibrant colors that cause it to stand out as a unique and beautiful tree. Strawberry Trees are also extremely popular for the pounds of delicious fruit they produce every summer.

Glossy green leaves draw visual attention to the Strawberry trees during every season, but the real show starts when it blooms in the fall. Thousands of bell shaped white to pink blossoms erupt to fill landscapes with pops of color when other plants are entering dormancy.

Before you know it your Strawberry tree will be growing tons of bright yellow and red fruits that slightly resemble strawberries, giving this tree its name. The colorful fruit hangs all over the tree creating a visual spectacle that remains unrivaled.

The unique fruit has soft inner flesh with a mildly sweet flavor, similar to a fig. It's very popular to use the fruit of a Strawberry tree to produce sweet preserves and jams, but it's also often used for making wines.

Strawberry Trees, also known as 'Cane Apple Trees', have a compact space saving size, which makes them perfect for radiant hedgerows and border plantings. With their high level of drought tolerance they can survive in hot and dry conditions in the south.

The fuss-free Strawberry tree will thrive in a variety of different soils and conditions, and even makes for the perfect container tree. Place a few in containers to frame your entry ways or keep your trees inside, they will act as stunning accent pieces that will amaze your family and friends with their vivid colors.

Pollination Info

Strawberry Tree Pollination

Strawberry Trees are self-fertile. You will get fruit with only one plant. However, adding an additional Strawberry Tree will drastically increase the size of your crop.

Planting & Care

The strawberry tree (Muntingia Calabura) is an evergreen tree recommended for USDA growing zones 8-11 or colder growing zones such as 4-7 if growing in a container. These trees will get fairly large, averaging a mature height and width of 15-30 feet. It has dark green, leathery, but glossy leaves. In the fall, when all other trees are losing their leaves, this tree starts producing pale pink and white bell-shaped flowers. Soon after, small yellow and red fruits resembling strawberries appear and will stay on the trees throughout the winter months making them a perfect food source for birds. With their mildly sweet flavor, they are often made into preserves, jams and even wine.

Seasonal Information: An established strawberry tree is hardy if exposed to brief cold snap temperatures of 20 degrees. They do best in hot and dry conditions in the south where risk of frost damage is minimal.

Location: Choose a location where your strawberry tree will receive full or partial sunlight and the soil drains well. They prefer acidic soil but can tolerate a variety of conditions and do well in coastal areas as they are salt-tolerant.

Note: This product grows best in well-draining soil. When you receive your plant, you may notice small, white beads or rocks in the soil - this medium is added to increase drainage and keep your plant happy and healthy!

Planting Directions:
1) Dig a hole for your strawberry tree that is three times as wide as the root ball and equal in depth.
2) Remove your tree from its container and place into the hole, ensuring it is standing upright and the top of the root ball is even with the ground.
3) Begin backfilling the hole with existing soil, tamping down lightly as you fill. Amend the soil with compost or peat moss to improve drainage.
4) Immediately water the area to settle the soil and help to eliminate air pockets.
5) Mulch around the base of the tree to conserve soil moisture and prevent weeds/grass from growing.

Watering: Water your tree regularly while it is establishing. Ensure the soil is moist, but not too wet. Once established, they are drought-tolerant so your normal rainfall will be enough unless you are experiencing extreme droughts or heat.

Fertilization: Apply an organic fertilizer or a slow-release fertilizer in spring.

Pests and Diseases: They are virtually pest free and disease resistant, but fungal issues can occur. A fungicide will help to prevent the spread of fungus.

Pruning: Very little pruning is needed to maintain the tree. Any diseased or broken branches can be pruned in spring.
