1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Remove the stake and ties at planting, as these are only for shipping. Choose a location that receives full sun and has well-draining soil for best growth. Dig a hole twice as wide and the same depth as the root ball. Position the tree in the center and backfill gently. When planting in a container, choose a container about 2” wider than the rootball and use a standard potting mix.

2. Watering: In-ground hibiscus should be watered every 2–3 days for the first growing season. Potted hibiscus should be watered when the soil is dry 2” down. Saturate the soil until water comes from the bottom of the container. Hibiscus bloom best and are healthiest with regular water, though they are prone to root rot in poor draining soil.

3. Pruning: Prune the tree in late winter or early spring to encourage bushier growth and maintain its shape. Remove any dead or damaged branches and thin out overcrowded areas to promote air circulation. Potted hibiscus can be pruned anytime they are becoming leggy or too large, though pruning during the growing season will reduce flowering.

4. Fertilizing: Potted hibiscus should be fertilized regularly throughout the growing season. Choose a fertilizer with higher potassium and lower phosphorus. Follow package instructions for rate.

5. Winterizing: Bring tropical hibiscus indoors once temperatures are below 60°F. Indoor temperatures should be maintained above 60°F. Place in a sunny window or use a full spectrum grow light. Do not fertilize in winter, but rather keep the plant healthy by providing good lighting and reducing water to avoid root rot.
