Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. When planting your Generous Gardener® Climbing Rose, choose a location that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight daily. Prepare the soil by mixing in well-rotted compost to improve drainage. Dig a hole twice the width of the root ball and no deeper than the root ball itself. Place the rose in the hole, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly to help settle the roots. Spread a 3-inch settled layer of mulch extending 3 feet around the plant to conserve moisture, insulate roots, and suppress weeds.
2. Watering: Water every 2–3 days for the first two weeks, then water 1–2 times per week during the first growing season, adjusting for your local climate and soil type. Roses prefer deep watering to build strong root systems. Once established, water deeply about once per week. Water at the base of the plant and avoid overhead watering to reduce disease risk. Mulching around the base helps retain moisture and suppress weeds.
3. Pruning: In early spring, when new growth begins, prune your Generous Gardener® Rose Bush to encourage healthy blooming. Remove dead or weak stems and shape the bush to maintain its form. Aim to cut back about one-third of the plant while ensuring to preserve healthy, outward-facing buds.
4. Fertilizing: Apply Espoma Rose-tone® or a balanced fertilizer formulated for roses, following package instructions. Fertilize in early spring and again in early summer, and avoid fertilizing after mid-summer.
