A Wave of Tropical Purple Flowers
The Tibouchina, or Princess Flower, will add a hint of the tropics and plenty of color to your yard. The flowers are a bright, almost neon purple, containing 5 petals and long purple stamens. The plant is covered in evergreen, narrow, and soft hairy leaves.
A heavy bloomer, the Tibouchina blooms from early spring to early summer in most climates. Once established, it’s relatively low maintenance and requires only supplemental watering during warm temperatures. This plant also attracts butterflies, hummingbirds, and other pollinators.
Originally found in tropical rainforests, the Princess Flower grows as a broadleaf evergreen in warm climates where it is hardy. Other climates can grow it in a container, bringing it inside to overwinter the plant. It has a natural round shape that makes it perfect as a border or accent plant.

Planting & Care
1. Planting: For your Princess Flower, choose a location that receives at least 6 hours of sunlight daily. Those who experience hot summers may also want to ensure there’s some afternoon shade. Princess Flowers prefers fertile, moist, and slightly acidic soil, but ensure it’s well-draining and doesn’t get soggy. After planting, apply a layer of mulch to help conserve moisture.
2. Watering: Princess Flowers need regular watering. Water the shrub weekly, but be careful to avoid making the soil soggy.
3. Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring with a slow-release fertilizer designed for flowering shrubs.
4. Pruning: Most gardeners choose to prune their Princess Flower to control its size and shape. If pruning, do so once the shrub has finished flowering. Prune diseased and dead branches as needed.
