1. Planting: Plant or repot within 4 weeks of arrival. Select a location with well-draining soil and ample sunlight. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and just deep enough to accommodate the roots without crowding. Carefully remove the plant from its pot and place it in the hole, backfilling gently with soil. Water well after planting to help settle the soil around the roots.

Container Growth: Choose a container that is only 1-2" larger in diameter than it's nursery pot. Clay pots are best for root health, but other materials can be used as long as they have drainage holes. Use citrus potting mix and add in additional perlite. Water thoroughly until water comes out of the drainage holes. Allow the soil to dry 2" before watering again. At the end of the growing season, bring citrus indoors once temperatures are 50 F at night, which protects roots from cold damage. Place in a sunny window so that the plant gets at least 5 hours of direct sun, or supplement with a full spectrum grow light, on for 12-16 hours, off for 8 hours. Reduce water and stop fertilizing in winter, as the plant will slow its growth in winter.

2. Watering: Water regularly, especially during dry spells or if the tree is in a container. Ensure the soil remains moist but not waterlogged. It’s best to water early in the morning or late in the afternoon to reduce evaporation. Always water at the base and avoid overhead watering.

3. Pruning: Pruning is not necessary for the Variegated Honeybell but can be done to maintain shape and remove any dead or weakened branches. It’s advisable to prune in late winter or early spring before new growth begins.

4. Fertilizing: Fertilize the tree with a citrus specific fertilizer, which includes specific nutrients which citrus need to thrive. This helps encourage healthy growth and fruit production. Be careful to follow package instructions for the right amount to use based on the size of your tree.
