Sweet Golden Plums Meet Spring Beauty
Transform your garden with the Beauty Japanese Plum Tree—a standout performer that combines ornamental elegance with dependable fruit production. In early spring, this self-fertile variety is covered in fragrant white blossoms before transitioning into a reliable producer of medium-sized fruit.
The plums ripen in early season and feature bright red skin with warm amber flesh inside. Sweet, juicy, and richly flavored, the fruit is excellent for fresh eating, jams, and baking. Beauty is known for its relatively low chill requirement, making it especially well-suited for regions with mild winters. Reaching a practical size for residential landscapes, this Japanese plum benefits from regular care and annual pruning to maintain structure and productivity. Like many fruiting plums, it may exhibit alternate bearing in heavy crop years. Plant in full sun with well-draining soil for best flowering and fruit set.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant your Beauty Plum in well-draining soil in full sun for best flowering and fruit production. In colder climates, plant away from low-lying areas and frost pockets to help protect early blossoms from frost damage. Dig a hole twice as wide and just as deep as the root ball. Place the tree in the hole, backfill with soil, and water thoroughly to settle the roots. Apply mulch around the base to conserve moisture, keeping it a few inches away from the trunk.
2. Watering: During the first growing season, water deeply every 2–3 days to establish strong roots. After establishment, water deeply once or twice per week during the growing season, adjusting for rainfall and climate conditions. Always water at the base and avoid overhead watering.
3. Fertilizing: In early spring, apply a balanced fertilizer or a fruit tree fertilizer higher in phosphorus and potassium to support blooming and fruit production. Follow package directions for application rates.
4. Pruning: Japanese plums are typically trained to a vase or open-center shape to encourage airflow and sunlight penetration. Because they produce fruit on one-year-old wood and spurs, regular dormant-season pruning helps maintain productivity. Thin immature fruit when they reach about dime-size, spacing fruits 4–5 inches apart to improve size and quality at harvest.
