Plum Tree Varieties

While there are tons of varieties of Plum Trees, they are typically categorized into three groups: European, Japanese and American hybrids. Hardy European Plums grow well across the U.S., while Japanese Plums thrive in warmer areas. American Plums tend to be the most cold-hardy.

A few of our favorite Plum varieties include:

  • Santa Rosa Plum Tree: The most popular Plum tree for commercial use and home growing, the Santa Rosa produces tons of sweet, dark purple fruit.
  • Methley Plum Tree: Considered one of the most productive and attractive Plum Trees, the Methley Plum has beautiful spring blossoms and juicy, deep-red fruit.
  • Bubblegum 'Toka' Plum Tree: The Bubblegum is the best pollinator Plum you can buy - it grows its own fruit, and helps other Plum trees produce more!
  • Black Ice Plum Tree: Incredibly cold-hardy, the Black Ice Plum Tree can tolerate cold weather down to -30 degrees, with large, purple-black plums.
  • Mount St. Helens Plum Tree: A hardy, compact Plum Tree, ideal for small spaces and tough weather conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions:

Where do Plum Trees grow best?
Plum Trees do best in full sun locations with well-draining, sandy soil. If possible, plant your Plum Tree in a South or West location to cut back on the wind, which in turn, will assist the tree in setting fruit.

Are Plum Trees easy to grow?
As long as you follow our planting and care tips, you should be successful in growing Plum Trees! Many of our Plum varieties are hardy and low-maintenance but will still require proper care to keep them thriving.

Do I need two Plum Trees to produce fruit?
Some Plum Trees are self-fertile, meaning you only need one Tree to produce fruit, and some are not self-fertile. Check the “Pollination” section at the bottom of each of our product pages for specific variety info. Either way, adding additional Plum Trees will increase the size of your crop, so it’s helpful to plant multiples.

How long does it take a Plum Tree to produce fruit?
Exact fruit timing will depend on specific location and growing conditions. Many of our Plum Trees will fruit within the first few years of being planted with the proper care and conditions.
