Semi-Dwarf European Variety for Home Orchards

Bring sweet, homegrown plums to your garden with the Seneca Plum Tree, a semi-dwarf European variety bred for superior flavor and reliable production. This tree produces large, dark purple plums with juicy golden flesh that ripens in late summer, extending your harvest season. The semi-dwarf form reaches just 12-15 feet tall, making it perfect for smaller landscapes while still delivering generous yields year after year. Seneca plums excel fresh off the tree, in desserts, jams, and preserves—their natural sweetness requires minimal added sugar. The tree is exceptionally cold-hardy and flexible with soil types, thriving in full sun conditions across most growing regions. For best fruit set, plant with a compatible pollinator variety nearby. Once established, this low-maintenance tree rewards you with decades of delicious fruit and beautiful spring blossoms.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant your Seneca Plum in well-draining soil and in full sun.

Dig a hole that is twice as wide but just as deep as the root ball. Place your tree, backfill your soil and water to settle the roots. Mulch the surrounding soil to conserve moisture.

2. Watering: Provide ample moisture during the growing season. If you’re not sure to water, check the soil about 3” down. If the soil is dry here, it’s time to water. Add a 3” layer of mulch pulled back 3–6” from the trunk to help conserve moisture and insulate the roots.

3. Fertilizing: Soil tests are recommended prior to fertilizing. Use a 10-10-10 in spring or an organic fruit tree fertilizer per package rates.

4. Pruning: Prune in early spring while tree is still dormant to maintain central or modified leader shape. Prune out dead or diseased wood any time of year. European pears need little thinning as they mature and produce on 2–6 year old spurs.
