Vigorous, High-Yielding Fig Tree for Cooler Climates
Grow delicious, juicy figs with the Desert King! This variety produces large, dark green fruit with striking red flesh that is sweet and flavorful. With a jam-like texture and mild undertones of honey and berries, these figs are perfect for eating fresh or adding to a variety of dishes.
A robust grower, Desert King fills out quickly, particularly in cooler climates. Cold-tolerant and resistant to rain damage, this tree ripens with an early crop in mid-summer, then sets a secondary flush, known as a breba crop, which develop on last year’s growth.
Versatile and ornamental, Desert King is a lovely addition to any landscape. With a rounded crown and lobed, green-gray foliage, this fig tree can be planted as a standalone accent, or used as a privacy hedge. Low-maintenance and highly adaptable, Desert King loves full sun and will thrive even in poor soil. Grow yours today!
Pollination Info
Desert King Fig Tree Pollination
Desert King Fig Trees are self-fertile. You will get fruit with only one plant. However, adding an additional Desert King Fig Tree will drastically increase the size of your crop.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant your Desert King Fig in an area that receives full to partial sunlight (6 to 8 hours of sun daily). While these trees prefer well-drained soil, they are adaptable to a number of different soil types.
Once you’ve selected your area, dig a hole that’s large enough to accommodate your tree’s root ball, place, and backfill the surrounding soil. Water to settle its roots and mulch around the tree to preserve moisture.
If you’re planting in a container, select a pot that’s about twice the width of your plant’s shipped container and ensure the pot has drainage holes. Add a mixture of your natural soil and organic planting mix to the container before you place your tree in it. Place your tree, then water until you see water coming out the bottom of the pot. Place your fig tree in front of a sunny window and allow the top 2 inches of the soil to dry before watering again.
2. Watering: We recommend watering young trees twice weekly. If you’re not sure when to water, feel your soil about 2 to 3 inches down. If the soil is dry here, water your tree until you see it flowing from your pot’s drainage holes.
3. Pruning: If desired, prune in late winter for shaping and size control.
4. Fertilizing: Fig trees typically don’t require any fertilizing, but if you notice slower growth, fertilize in the spring with a slow-release, well-balanced organic fertilizer, like formula 10-10-10.
