Brighten Up Your Winter Landscape with Berry Poppins®
When the weather begins to grow colder, Berry Poppins® is ready to shine! This stunning winterberry holly provides year-round interest, starting in the spring when delicate white flowers burst forth. The flowers transition to small green berries, which are mostly hidden by the glossy green leaves. As autumn arrives, the berries begin to change colors and the foliage shifts to a blazing yellow. As the temperature cools and the days shorten, Berry Poppins® puts on her amazing show of branches laden with bright red berries.
Compact with a dwarf habit, Berry Poppins® is practically perfect for any small space. Easy to grow and care for, this holly is resistant to deer and pests. You’ll love seeing the many birds and pollinators who flock to this native evergreen during each season.
All winterberry hollies have male and female varieties, and both plants must be present in order for the female Berry Poppins® to produce her signature red berries. An excellent choice for a pollinator mate is Mr. Poppins®, and only one male specimen is needed for up to five female hollies. For best results, plant the males and females within 50 feet of each other in order to attract pollinators like bees and butterflies to ensure fruit. Add the lovely Berry Poppins® to your landscape today!
About Proven Winners®: Proven Winners® ColorChoice Shrubs offers flowering shrubs, evergreens, and trees that have been tested for eight to ten years to ensure they outperform conventional varieties. That means bigger flowers, more colorful foliage, reblooming, disease resistance, new habits, or anything that makes them more beautiful and easier to grow in your landscape or garden.
Pollination Info
Proven Winners® Berry Poppins® Holly Shrub Pollination
We carry male and female hollies at our nursery, and you will need both to produce berries on the female plant. However, hollies are hard to tell apart when they are not fruiting, and we can’t guarantee whether you will receive a male or female. For best results, we suggest planting in groups to enjoy berries on the female plants and lush greenery on both year-round.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Dig a hole twice the diameter of the root ball and just as deep. Moisten the hole with water, place the plant’s roots into the hole, back fill and tamp the soil firmly down around the roots.
2. Watering: Keep the plant moist for the first year of growth to help the plant establish roots. Generally, you should water the plant at least once per week, especially during periods of drought for optimum growth. After the first year, you should only need to water in times of extended drought.
3. Fertilizing: Fertilize Berry Poppins® in the early spring or fall using a general purpose fertilizer. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer’s label for ratio requirements.
5. Pollination: Berry Poppins® must be placed within 50 feet of male holly varieties like Mr. Poppins® in order for them to be pollinated and produce berries.
