Glossy Holly Shrub With Winter Berries, Perfect for Hedges
Add more greenery and height to your yard with the Screen Play Holly! Plant this shrub as a hedge, privacy screen, mass planting, and more. With its sprawling height and dense habit, it's a natural way to add privacy to your yard.
This beautiful Holly shrub has glossy green leaves with a touch of bronze coloring, and in winter, you get classic red berries for the holiday season. You even get white blooms in the spring for a colorful display all year-round.
Plus, this shrub is resistant to deer, diseases, and pests for a hardy variety that is easy to grow. It's also heat-tolerant for those warmer seasons, and it's less "pokey" than most holly plants.
Want to inject a bit more vibrancy into your yard or garden? Buy the Screen Play Holly now!
Pollination Info
Screen Play Holly Shrub Pollination
We carry male and female hollies at our nursery, and you will need both to produce berries on the female plant. However, hollies are hard to tell apart when they are not fruiting, and we can’t guarantee whether you will receive a male or female. For best results, we suggest planting in groups to enjoy berries on the female plants and lush greenery on both year-round.
Planting & Care
1. Planting: Before planting, water the area. Plant your Screen Play Holly in either full or partial shade, ensuring it receives at least four hours of direct sunlight each day. For the best coloration, full sun is recommended.
When planting, dig a hole that is twice the width of the pot. Position the plant 1-2 inches above the surrounding soil level and backfill the hole with soil. Water deeply to settle the plant, adding more soil if necessary. Finally, apply a 1-2 inch layer of mulch around the plant, making sure to keep the area closest to the stem clear.
2. Watering: The Screen Play Holly has moderate watering needs. It thrives in moist, well-drained soil and should be watered consistently, especially during dry spells. However, it's essential not to overwater, as too much moisture can cause root rot.
3. Fertilizing: Fertilize annually in the spring with a slow-release fertilizer for an acid-loving shrub. Use a fertilizer designed for evergreen or acid-loving plants in spring and fall (like our Holly-Tone Fertilizer) to keep them at their best. Apply 3-4 inches of arborist mulch to insulate the root system and retain moisture more effectively.
4. Pruning: Please wait to prune until the tiny white spring flowers finish blooming.
