This European variety produces what is arguably the most delicious pear. After a showy display of fragrant white blossoms in mid-spring, prepare yourself in late September for an abundance of the sweetest, juiciest pears you’ll ever eat!
The pear itself is as lovely as it is delicious. It grows to a light yellow-green and is often blushed with a patch of crimson on one side. It is large and robust in shape, with a rich flavor that ranks superior. Its smooth white flesh has a sweet and creamy texture, making it a top-pick for pear connoisseurs.
The Comice Pear is often referred to as the Christmas Pear, as it is the most popular pear to be wrapped in gift baskets. With its festive shades of soft greens and reds, it is certain to impress any lucky recipient! However, don’t think this pear is only enjoyed over the holidays. This fruit has a lengthy shelf life, and can be stored up to four months!
Showcase your supply as the centerpiece of the table, and don’t worry about hurrying to eat them before they’re too ripe. You’ll enjoy pears from October through January with plenty left to share. This juicy pear is a favorite for canning. Stock up your pantry with jars of sweet juicy pears to enjoy through the year, and have even more options to offer as gifts! Your pear preserves, or homemade pear-butter, will make great gifts for teachers, neighbors, and friends. The secret to the recipe is the pears, of course, grown from your very own tree!
The compact height of this tree makes its fruit easy to get to, but don’t let its smaller size fool you! Plant it amongst other pollinators and you’ll be rewarded with bushels of fruit. Its upright stature is a perfect fit for those with limited space for landscaping. The butterflies and bees won’t be the only ones to admire its blossoms in spring! Planting & Care
Planting Instructions: Choose a planting site that provides at least six to eight hours of sunlight per day. Ideally, the site should afford some wind protection in areas that suffer high winds.
The Comice pear tree grows best in soil with a pH level of 6.5. The soil should be well-draining. The tree does not tolerate overly wet roots.
Dig a hole that is at least twice or three times the diameter of the tree’s root ball. Add an abundant amount of organic matter to the soil at a ratio of 50 percent hummus with 50 percent soil. Place the tree’s roots into the hole and gently smooth out the roots. Fill the hole halfway with soil and organic matter and fill the hole with water. Allow the water to drain into the soil. Once the water has drained, finish filling the hole with the dirt and hummus. Tamp the soil down around the tree to remove all air pockets.
The tree’s graft union should sit two inches above the soil. The bud union should always point north to avoid excessive exposure to the sun.
Build a three or four-inch tall circular dam of mud around the tree and fill with water. The dam will keep the water from flowing away from the tree’s roots when you water the tree.
Apply three inches of mulch such as bark chips, pine needles, peat moss, or recycled plastic chunks around the base of the tree in and outside the soil dam. Keep the mulch three inches away from the tree’s trunk. The mulch will help keep the soil moist and retard weed growth.
Watering: Keep the soil around the Comice pear tree moist but not overly water-logged. Water the tree once per week during the dry season.
Fertilizing: In the early spring, fertilize the tree using a general purpose fertilizer. Follow the instructions on the fertilizer’s label for amounts.
Pruning: Prune away any suckers as they appear. In the early spring, prune any diseased or damaged branches from the Comice pear tree. When the tree is one-year-old, prune a few branches from the tree’s canopy to allow airflow and sunlight to reach the tree. The third year the tree can be pruned to maintain its height and shape if desired.
