Sweet, Robust Plums

Why French Prune Trees?

The classic fruit tree is new and improved with the vivacious French Prune Plum Tree, crafted to produce in its very first year of growth. Meticulously curated at our nursery so that it thrives at your home, the French Prune Plum Tree strikes the ideal balance between an eye-catching ornamental and amazing producer in your garden.

Known as California’s most popular plum variety, specifically for its prunes and very sweet, sumptuous fruit, the French Prune has it all. Pluck your delectable plums right off its branches for an afternoon snack or save them to dry for a handful of prunes later on.

Why Fast-Growing-Trees.com is Better

For starters, our French Prune Plum merges fast growth with self-fertile development. You don’t need a green thumb to maintain it, and though it doesn’t need another tree to fruit, more trees do mean a bigger harvest. Even better, our French Prune comes in a smaller, more manageable size for home landscapes.

And since we’ve cared for your French Prune at our nursery, long before it arrives to your door, it will be right at home in your side yard, backyard or garden. No matter where it’s placed, it thrives because we’ve done all the work ahead of time. Order your own French Prune today!

Pollination Info

French Prune Tree Pollination

French Prune Trees are self-fertile. You will get fruit with only one plant. However, adding an additional French Prune Tree will drastically increase the size of your crop.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Your French Prune Plum Tree needs a full sun location, so ensure you’re picking a bright, well-lit spot for your tree’s new home. We also recommend planting in well-drained soil.

If possible, plant your new French Prune Tree in a South or West location to cut down on wind exposure. When you’re ready to plant, dig a hole that’s three times as wide as the root ball and just as deep. Then, backfill the soil, tamp down, and water to settle the soil. Once the hole has been completely filled, add a layer of organic mulch around the tree to help conserve water. Do not let the mulch touch the trunk of your French Prune Tree.

2. Watering: Water your tree generously, ensuring that it is watered weekly, or twice a week for the first growing season. Deep watering encourages the roots to extend deeply into the soil, making the tree more drought resistant. If you're not sure when to water, simply check the surrounding soil about 2 or 3 inches down. If the soil is dry in this area, it's time to water.

3. Pruning: Avoid pruning for a year so that your French Prune acclimates to its environment. Young Plum Trees are typically pruned in the late winter to early spring, before their buds begin to break, which prevents disease. Use a sterilized cutting tool (rubbing alcohol is ideal) and leave the upright, vigorous branches plenty of space for light exposure.

4. Fertilizing: Young French Prunes (less than 3 years old) will benefit from balanced 10-10-10 fertilizer formula, which should be applied once in around mid-April and again in early June. More established trees require one annual application of the same balanced formula in mid-April. Use 8 ounces for every year of your French Prune Tree’s age.

*Tip: Birds may be attracted to developing plums. Consider utilizing a “bird net” to preserve your plum fruit on the French Prune.
