Tough, Year-Round Good Looks
Experts often call the Hackberry Tree “one tough tree.” That's because it can thrive in nearly every type of soil, heat and cold, and even drought. Able to flourish with minimal care, hackberries give shade and privacy to your yard.
It's attractive and low-maintenance. Even with only minimal pruning, the tree maintains its rounded shape of dense, dark green leaves. In the fall, Hackberry leaves turn yellow or yellow-green, accompanied by small, orange-red to deep-purple fruits.
Looking for a tree that will mature quickly with little intervention? The Hackberry is a great choice. This tree can shoot up anywhere between 13 and 24 inches each year, no matter what type of soil you have in your yard. It can even withstand periods of both flooding and drought.
In addition to providing shade and privacy, the Hackberry is a haven for wildlife, including robins, cedar waxwings, and mockingbirds. Butterflies, including the mourning cloak and tawny emperor, also flock to the tree. These features make the Hackberry a smart alternative to the Elm - it's similar in appearance but less prone to disease.

Planting & Care
When you’re ready to plant, dig a hole that’s approximately two times the size of your plant’s root ball. Place your Hackberry in the hole, back fill the soil and water to settle the roots.
2. Watering: Your Hackberry is drought tolerant once established, but it’s important to regularly water for the first few growing seasons. Water about once weekly or check the surrounding soil - if it's dry about 2 or 3 inches down, it’s time to water.
3. Fertilizing: Apply a well-balanced fertilizer to your Hackberry in early spring.
4. Pruning: Significant pruning isn't required to maintain your Hackberry - however, you can prune your Hackberry in the spring to shape as needed.
