Famous for Unique, Tropical Flowers
The Bird Of Paradise, or ‘Crane Flower’ plant is known for its stunning flowers that resemble the shape of a tropical bird. The flowers sit among thick green leaves and look as if cranes are perched in the foliage.
The flowers sit on top of green canes with horizontal blue-grey bracts that sit horizontally. At the end of the bracts orange petals shoot straight up, looking like a bird’s feathery crown.
Once planted, they will morph your landscape into a tropical paradise filled with beauty and a sweet floral fragrance. Spectators will have to do a double take, because at first they’ll mistake the vibrant blooms for exotic wildlife, and then they will be drawn into the bright, beautiful colors.
You don’t have to live in a tropical area for Bird Of Paradise plants to thrive because they will grow in containers and inside without any fuss. Place your Bird Of Paradise inside near a sunny window when it starts to get cold, and then place it back outside when temperatures start to warm up again.
Bird Of Paradise plants have canes and large, thick leaves that are similar to banana leaves. They provide a lush background for the vibrant tropical flowers to pop against.
The Bird Of Paradise is often referred to as the ‘beginners tropical’ because it’s an incredibly low maintenance plant that’s easy to grow indoors and out. With a little water, your Bird Of Paradise will thrive.
Planting & Care
Planting: Your Bird of Paradise will grow best with lots of bright, indirect light. It can adapt to medium light, although growth may be slower. Your Bird of Paradise will be happiest near, but not directly in front of, a sunny window.
You won't need to repot your Bird of Paradise right away, but when you're ready, choose a pot that's 1-2 inches larger than your plant's shipped container, with good drainage. Remove your Bird of Paradise from its shipped container, place it in its new pot, and backfill with organic potting mix.
Watering: Your Bird of Paradise will typically enjoy a weekly watering. Water when the top 50% of soil is dry, and water thoroughly until water flows through the pot's drainage holes.
You can also mist your Bird of Paradise plant occasionally, to help increase humidity and keep its leaves clean.
FGT Tip: Browning along the leaf edges can be from chemicals in tap water. If you notice browning leaves, switch to filtered water, or let your water sit out overnight before watering your Bird of Paradise.
Fertilizing: Feed once a month in spring and summer, with a liquid fertilizer designed for house plants.
