A Burst of Pink Color in a Compact Package
If you love the vibrant charm of crape myrtles but dread the usual battles with diseases, the First Editions® Plum Magic™ Crape Myrtle is the perfect solution. Part of the innovative Magic™ Crape Myrtle Series, this stunning ornamental tree combines eye-catching beauty with incredible disease resistance.
From July to September, the Plum Magic™ Crape Myrtle dazzles with an abundance of wavy, fuchsia-pink blooms that will make your garden the envy of the neighborhood. The foliage is just as impressive, starting out in a rich plum-purple hue in the spring before transitioning to a deep, lush green that perfectly complements the bright flowers.
This compact crape myrtle stands out not only for its beauty but also for its size. Growing to a manageable height of 6 to 10 feet, it’s ideal for smaller landscapes or as a striking hedge. Its rounded, bushy form adds structure and visual interest, making it a versatile addition to any garden design.
One of the standout features of the Plum Magic™ Crape Myrtle is its hardiness. With the right conditions — plenty of sunlight and well-drained soil — it requires minimal maintenance, allowing you to sit back and enjoy the show as it blooms earlier than other varieties and keeps the color coming with heavy reblooming. Grow your First Editions® Plum Magic™ Crape Myrtle today!
Planting & Care
Planting: Choose a location in full sun for the best blooms, although the tree can tolerate some shade. Ensure the soil is well-draining. While adaptable to various soil types, Plum Magic™ Crape Myrtles prefer slightly acidic soil with a pH of 5.0 to 6.5. Mulch with a 2-3 inch layer of pine straw or pine bark, but avoid letting the mulch touch the trunk to reduce the risk of pests and disease.
Watering: Water deeply about twice a week for the first three months after planting. This helps establish the roots. Once established, the Plum Magic™ Crape Myrtle is drought-tolerant. Water deeply about once a week during dry conditions.
Fertilizing: Fertilize in early spring and at planting time to give your tree a boost for optimal blooms. Use a balanced, slow-release fertilizer. If your soil is slightly alkaline, choose a fertilizer that's designed for acid-loving plants.
Pruning: You can prune in late winter to contain the tree's shape while promoting growth for the blooming season.
