A Desert Favorite with Unique Blooms

Why Fox Tail Agave Plants?

Fox Tail Agave, Swan’s Neck Agave, Soft Tip Agave or Lion’s Tail Agave - whichever name you prefer, this plant won’t disappoint.

The Fox Tail Agave features wide, tapered leaves ranging from pale to silvery green, making it the perfect complement to deeper green or red foliage in your landscape. Unlike other succulents, its leaves don't feature teeth or spines, making it a friendlier addition to your landscape.

But the real show of the Fox Tail Agave comes from its incredibly unique flowers. When mature, the Foxtail Agave blooms with a tall, curving stalk covered in tiny, yellow-green flowers, resembling an animal tail or neck. Once the flower dies back, seed pods will give way to new plants in the surrounding area!

A single rosette can grow up to 3-5 feet tall and 3-5 feet wide, with the flower stalk reaching out to 10 feet tall. It makes a unique, dramatic focal point in garden beds, or used in decorative containers.

The best part? Like most succulents, the Fox Tail Agave is impressively drought-tolerant and easy to grow. It can tolerate most soil types and can tolerate partial shade - and it's virtually pest- and disease-free, as well as deer-resistant.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: When planting Fox Tail American Agave, find a location that offers full to partial sun (4 to 8 hours of sunlight daily). This plant can adapt to a wide variety of soil type, as long as it drains well.

Dig your hole two times the width and slightly shallower than the root ball. Use your fingers to separate the roots of your Fox Tail Agave, and gently position downward in the hole. The top of the root flare (where the end of the roots meets the trunk) should be about an inch above the surrounding soil. Hold the plant straight as you begin to backfill the site, tamping down the soil as you go. When finished, apply water to settle the soil and remove any air pockets that may have formed.

If you're planting in a container, select a pot that's twice as large as your plant's shipped container, use organic soil, and select a sunny spot for your plant.

Fox Tail Agave should be planted in containers in cooler climates - bring them inside or cover them before the first frost in winter.

2. Watering: The Fox Tail Agave has low water needs, characteristic of most succulents. Water occasionally to keep the soil from drying out competely - more often for container-planted Agave. You may need to water once a week in the heat of summer, and rarely in winter.

3. Fertilizing: Agaves will benefit from the application of a weak, slow-release fertilizer in spring.

4. Pruning: You can prune your Fox Tail Agave to keep the leaves from egttting too large. You can also remove the plantlets that will propagate around it for aesthetic reasons.
