Visual Interest in Tough Conditions

Why Grey Twig Dogwood Shrubs?

Ornamental features meet easy, adaptable growth, making the Grey Twig Dogwood Shrub extra versatile. In fact, this deciduous shrub is ideal for locations in your yard where you’d like something stunning but have problematic soils or conditions, like heat or drought, rocky terrain, and extreme cold.

And it's unique. Aptly named, this shrub's twigs are grey, rather than brown, which offer a cool contrast to its growth. The Grey Twig Dogwood's lance-shaped foliage emerges in an elegant grey-green that transitions to a rich purple-red for the autumn months. Late spring interest appears as clusters of white blossoms that later transition to fruit.

So, the Grey Twig Dogwood grows fruit, too. Each berry on the Grey Twig is supported by a red stem, which remains during the winter months after the fruit is gone for extra ornamental interest. Plus, because the Grey Twig boasts an equal spread with steady, full growth, making it ideal for borders, foundation plantings and focal points in plant beds.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Start by selecting an area with well-drained soil and full to partial sun (anywhere from 4 to 8 hours of sunlight per day). Once you've selected your location, dig a hole that's two times the diameter of your tree’s root ball and comprised of equal depth. Place your shrub in the planting hole, keeping the top of the root ball even with the ground. Backfill the soil, water to settle the roots, and then mulch around the base of the Grey Twig to conserve soil moisture.

2. Watering: Water your Grey Twig once or twice weekly to ensure the soil stays consistently moist. If you're not sure when to water your shrub, simply check the surrounding soil with your index finger. Test the soil's dryness about 2 or 3 inches down - if the soil is dry here, it's time to water your shrub.

3. Fertilizing: Generally, you won't need to fertilize your Grey Twig, but if you do choose to fertilize your shrub, do so in early spring with a general-purpose fertilizer. Follow label instructions for best results.
