Blue Spruce Appeal + Built-In Disease Resistance

Why Meyer Spruce Trees?

Considered an exotic evergreen in the United States, the Meyer Spruce is catching on as a favored alternative to the Blue Spruce. A native of China and Russia, it’s virtually identical to its American counterpart in shape, color, and texture.

Like the Blue Spruce, it’s most notable for its distinct, blue-green color and tapered conical shape. But what sets it apart is its disease resistance. This Chinese variety is tolerant of common pests that can wreak havoc on our native species. In fact, if you’ve attempted to grow the Blue Spruce with little success, you’ll find this conifer easily fills in for the Blue Spruce.

Tipped in silvery-blue, boughs are upright and dense with foliage. Soft, needle-like leaves are half-inch to an inch long and cover the branch in a uniform, spiral fashion, making it perfect for a festive look during winter...especially when it's covered in snow. And since it weathers fluctuating conditions, from hot and cold to dry and rainy, it's a vigorous, hardy grower.

Planting & Care

1. Planting: Plant in well-drained soil and full sun (6 to 8 hours of sunlight daily).

When you're ready to plant, dig a large hole twice as wide as the size of the root ball and just as deep. Place your tree, and backfill the hole with a mixture of your native soil and some gardening soil. Mulch around the base of the spruce to keep weeds and grasses from growing around the planting site.

2. Watering: During times of drought, additional watering may be needed. Generally, we recommend watering about once per week.

3. Fertilizing: Feed with mild, slow-acting fertilizer tabs for the initial growing season and save stronger fertilizers for when the tree is established. Once the tree is established, feed it twice a month during early spring and once a month during the summer months.

4. Pruning: Prune in the late winter or early spring. For young trees, follow branch tips back until you find two branches growing to either side. Snip off the center branch growth. Doing this will encourage the side branches that remain to grow faster and to make the tree bushier.
