Planting & Care
1. Planting: When planting a Viburnum, dig a hole that is two to three times as wide as the root ball. Place soil around the perimeter of the hole. If the soil is compacted, mix in bagged topsoil and/or a good planting mix. For sandy soil, mix in topsoil, peat moss, and/or compost. Remove the Viburnum from its container by squeezing the sides, lifting the root ball, and loosening some feeder roots. Plant the Viburnum so that the top edge of the root ball is at or slightly above ground level. If the soil is poorly drained, improve soil drainage or choose a different plant species.
Moonlit Lace® Viburnum is a plant that is easy to grow in most types of soil as long as it is well-drained and has average fertility. It can thrive in both full sun and part shade, but it doesn't like to be in constantly soggy or wet conditions. For the best flowering, it is suggested to provide at least 5 hours of direct sunlight per day.
2. Watering: Deeply water the planting area, including the root ball. Once it is established, it has good drought tolerance. Water during early morning hours with an automated system. Test soil moisture regularly and adjust irrigation time to maintain moist but not wet soil.
3. Fertilizing: Apply 1-2" of mulch to conserve moisture and suppress weed growth. Feed your Viburnums with a slow-release shrub & tree food or natural organic plant food after they bloom for healthy foliage and heavy blooming. Stop fertilization two months before the first frost date to prevent damage to new growth. For Viburnums in pots, use a slow-release granular fertilizer or water-soluble liquid plant food for containers.
4. Pruning: Viburnums don't need pruning but can be pruned for shaping, size control, or to remove damaged or dead branches. It's possible to prune taller varieties to form small trees. Light pruning can be done year-round, but extensive pruning should be done in late winter or early spring. Avoid pruning two months before the first frost date to prevent frost damage to new growth.
