Planting & Care
1. Planting: Plant where they can receive full sunlight (between 6-8 hours per day). Locate these plants in full sunlight in any well-drained soil, but sandy soil is ideal. If planted in a container, fill with a well-drained potting media and at least one good drainage hole. Allow at least 2 feet on each side of the plant and 2-3 feet away from sidewalks or driveways.
2. Watering: Water regularly for the first year but not to the point of sogginess. Then, water occasionally especially during periods of hot, dry weather. Be careful not to overwater.
3. Fertilization: You can feed them lightly before new growth appears in spring with a good-quality, general-purpose fertilizer.
4. Pruning: Don’t cut the flower stalks after blooming, as they will produce fruit. Additionally, the seeds provide winter sustenance for songbirds that visit your garden. The stalks can be removed in spring. You can also remove older leaves, which will eventually die down and turn brown.
